You may have already seen many solutions to Ultima 7: The Black Gate but none of them are as complete as this one. My name is James Abraham and my mission is to write solutions that will take you completely through a game without mistakes. This is gonna be my first. I saw many solutions to games that were absolutely disgusting (I'm talking about IMC RAZOR and others even THE ELECTRONIC GAMER!) They give poor instructions and left much to be desired (plus many mistakes) Well here goes! GENERAL TIPS ------------ PARTY MEMBERS You automatically start off with Iolo in your group. Here's a list of other people who will join. Name Place Attributes Shamino Britian (can be found at Tracker:will tell name Blue Boar during afternoon of any cave. avg. attrbutes or house west blue boar) old budy highly reccomended Sentri Britian (found west of inn high dexterity. Iolo Dupre Shamino and Spark are musts. (Spark will cry if you don't take him and Iolo Dupre and Shamino's feelings will be very hurt considering you've known them since ULTIMA 1!) TRAINING In Ultima 7 you earn training points after each level. Almost everyone except Spark will start on Level three. You earn experience through finish puzzles and defeating bad guys. Since you are the only one who can use magic, give Intelligence, Magic training only to yourself. Here is a list of Attributes and what they mean. STRENGTH: Strength is the measure of how much force and individual can apply against an enemy or object. Some objects can't be lifted till the AVATAR's Strength is high enough. EVERYONE needs training in strength. It also determines hitpoints. DEXTERITY: Dexterity teaches you to hit a target in the right place. It is good for people who use range weapons such as bows, crossbows, and slings. Dexterity with Strength will let you hit a target in the right place with lots of force. IOLO and TSERMEND need the more dexterity training than others. Dexterity and Strength determines hit points (Strength more than Dexterity) INTELLIGENCE: Intelligence measures how quick you learn. It also determines Spell Points. Thus the higher intelligence the more likely a spell will be cast successfully. Only the AVATAR really neads Intelligence training. COMBAT: Strength and Dexterity are used through combat. If you have high strength and dexterity but low combat, your fighting skills will be poor. Combat teaches you how to use Strength and Dexterity together for best fighting. EVERYONE needs combat training. MAGIC: Magic is the ability to manipulate the magical ether to produce an event. The AVATAR is the only one who needs magic training since he is the only one who can use magic. Magic and Intelligence determines Spell points. Here is a list of all the Trainers of Britiania. Some focus on one particular attribute. Those help you increase those attributes highly. They are marked with IN DEPTH dex=dexterity str=strength int=intelligence com=combat mag=magic Trainer Location Attrib. Cost Denby Britian Dex, Int, Mag 75 Sentri Britian Dexterity 30(free if in party) Zella Britian Dex, Com 45 Lucky Buccaneer's Den Intelligence 35 Rayburt Cove Str, Dex, Com 60 De Snel Jhelom Com (in depth) 40 Karenna Minoc Dex, Com 20 Jakher Minoc Str, Int 20 Chad Moonglow Dex, Com 45 Jillian Moonglow Int, Magic 35 Menion Serpent's Hold Str, Com 45 Inforlem Terfin Str, Dex, Com 50 Inforlem Terfin Int(in depth), Mag 50 Markus Trinsic Combat 20 Zaksam Vesper Com(in depth), Str 40 Bradman Yew Dex(in depth) 30 Penni Yew Str, Com 35 Perrin Yew Int(in depth), Mag 45 *Have Iolo and Tsermend train with Bradman for dexterity, they will get to train for half price. Make sure you train them for str and com also *Menion focuses on str and combat with heavy weapons *Chad focuses on dex and combat with light weapons *Suggestion:Either have your players go through extensive in Dex and Com (which will cost 3 training points) or learn either with Inforlem or Rayburt (which will also cost 3 training poins) Inforlem and Rayburt will focus on all the attrbutes non Avatar players need. *For magic training go either to Inforlem or Jillian *Remember the maxium an atrribute goes to is 30 so once you reach it stop training in the attribute. *If you have Forge of Virtue (which I will eventually right a solve for) Lord British will raise all your members strength up to 50 (i think..It might be more than 30 but less than 50) after you solve Forge of Virtue HEALING Either go to Lord British for free healing, have Jaana heal (only once a day), or learn the Cure, Heal, Mass Cure, Mass Heal, Resurrect, and Restoration spells. Otherwise go to one of these healers. Csil in Britian (don't bother if you're in Britian go to Lord British) Healing-40 Cure Poison-30 Ressurrect-45 Jaana in Cove (if she isn't in party) Elad in Moonglow Healing-30 Healing-25 Cure Poison-15 Cure Poison-10 Ressurect-400 Ressurect-425 Lady Leigh in Serpent's Hold Inmanilem in Terfin Healing-25 Healing-25 Cure Poison-8 Cure Poison-10 Ressurect-385 Ressurrect-430 Chantu in Trinsic Reyna in Yew Healing-30 Healing-30 Cure Poison-15 Cure Poison-10 Ressurrect-400 Ressurect-400 EQUIPMENT Try to get as many players as you can with Magic Armor. It's hard to find, but worth it considering it is the strongest, and lightest. Your gonna have to work through leather, then chain or scale (chain is reccommended), then plate. Well your gonna have to let them go through that list anyway. As for weapons that is totally your own choice. Here's a list of weapons (first weakest and lightest, last strongest and heavyiest) EDGE WEAPONS IMPACT WEAPONS POLEARMS Dagger Club Whip Main Gauche Hammer Spear Sword Mace Morning Star Two Handed Axe Two Handed Hammer Halberd Two Handed Sword THROWN/RANGE Sling Blow Gun (sleep or Poison) Throwing Axe Hawk Boomerang Bow Crossbow Magic Bow Triple Crossbow Cannon (really can't be used in Battle) MAGIC WEAPONS -no particular order FIRE SWORD-better than normal sword not as good as 2-handed. Also works as a permanent torch! MAGIC SWORD-Much better than normal sword as it is VERY accurate SWORD OF DEFENSE-protects like plate mail, not nearly as heavy, equivalent to normal sword. This sword is seen a lot in Ultima 7 part 2:Serpent Isle JUGGARNUT HAMMER-just like 2-handed hammer except you can throw it and it will come back to you. MAGEBANE-great against anything with spell casting abilities. If it hits the person with spell casting abilities, he or she loses them MAGIC AXE-axe that you can throw and it will come back to you GREAT DAGGER-looks and feels like normal dagger but once it hits enemy it becomes as powerful as a sword (some just a powerful as 2-handed sword!) you can tell them by their red tip. BLACKROCK SWORD-hey! you can only get this if you purchase forge of virtue! It is the best weapon in the whole game. Can be set to kill or throw fireball FIREDOOM STAFF-staff that throws lethal balls of fire. Reccommended not to be used because it often hits party members. FIRE WAND-has limited amount of Fire. Throws fireballs. Only works for a certain amount of time (but long time) LIGHTNING WAND-throws lightnig for certain amount of times. (long time though) MAGICIANS WAND-more powerful than fire wand and lasts longer MAGIC ARROW/BOLT-more powerful and accurate then normal arrow/bolt LOVE ARROW-don't ask me! Never figured out what they do! Found in DUGEON of DESPISE TSERMEND ARROW-puts target to sleep BURST ARROW-Once it hits the targer, it becomes ten bolts that shoot out LUCKY ARROW-more accurate than normal or magic arrow STARBURST-once it hits target, it bursts out. Not ver powerful though, good for opening some locked chests. GLASS SWORD-can kill it's target once, but then it breaks. There are some magic weapons I probably didn't find. If you find them use it, and it will eventually become clear what they do. Here's a list of armourers and what they provide at what price Grayson in Britain Zorn in Minoc Coop in Britain(Iolo's bows) Dagger-20 Dagger-12 Bow-40 Mace-20 Mace-15 Crossbow-125 Sling-20 Sword-70 Triple Crossbow-400 Spear-25 Throwing Axe-20 12 Arrows-25 Sword-100 2-handed Sword-125 12 Bolts-30 Throwing Axe-25 2-handed Axe-70 2-handed Sword-250 Chain Coif-80 Jordan in Serpents Hold 2-handed Axe-100 Chain Armour-100 (Iolo's South) Leather Armour-50 Chain Leggings-50 Bow-35 Chain Armour-150 Plate Armour-300 Magic Bow-400 Plate Armour-300 Plate Leggings-120 Crossbow-110 Leather Gloves-20 Gauntlets-20 Triple Crossbow-400 Crested Helm-75 Crested Helm-60 12 Arrows-20 Spiked shield-60 Great Helm-150 20 Bolts-20 Budo in Buccaneer's Den Sir Richter in Serpent's Hold Bow-40 Dagger-12 Club-20 Halberd-200 Dagger-20 Mace-20 Halberd-250 Morning Star-25 Sword-100 Spear-25 12 Arrows-25 Sword-65 12 Bolts-30 2-handed sword-175 Plate Armour-325 Gauntlets-18 Plate Leggings-200 Greaves-40 Scale Armour-100 Plate Leggings-160 Gauntlets-25 Gorget-175 Gorget-40 Great Helm-150 Great Helm-200 Buckler-18 Curved Heater-35 Spiked Shield-22 Kliftin in Jhelom Club-5 Dell in Trinsic Dagger-10 Bow-30 Halberd-150 Club-15 Mace-15 Dagger-10 Main Gauche 20 Mace-15 Morning Star-15 Sling-10 Sword-60 Sword-50 Scale Armour-120 2-handed Sword-80 Gorget-30 2-Handed Hammer-60 Crested Helm-150 12 Arrows-10 12 Bolts-15 Leather Leggings-25 Chain Leggings-35 Leather Armour-40 Leather Helm-25 Wooden shield-15 Now you're asking me, James which armour is right for me? And how bout weapons Well all I can say is lower levels need leather, then chain, then plate (you can substitute Magic armour in any occasion). More or less it all depends on how much you can carry (which is determined by strength). Leather is the worst, Chain and Scale are equal (scale's heavier), and Plate is the best. Magic is better than all of them. A gorget only comes in Plate or Magic so you have to one no matter what (a gorget provides a lot of protection considering it covers the neck). Don't bother with greaves, all they are is half plate leggings, get plate leggings instead. Here's a list of all armour found in Ultima 7 LEATHER SCALE CHAIN Leather Armour Scale Armour Chain Armour Leather Leggings Scale Leggings Chain Legggings Leather helm Crested Helm Chain Coif (helm) Leather boots Leather Gloves PLATE MAGIC Leather Collar (another Plate Armour Magic Armour type of Gorget) Plate Leggings Magic Leggings Kidney Belt Gauntlets Magic Gauntlets Gorget Magic Gorget Great Helm Magic Helm Magic Boots MONEY Now that you know about all this great stuff you can buy, you're saying, James how can I make money to buy these things. Simple. You can (a) Kill of enemies and hope that they have money in their loot, (b) sell gems to sean in Britain for 30 a piece, (c) sell venom to Kessler in Britain for 50 a piece, (d) work for Mack (collecting eggs 1 gold a piece), (e) exchange gold nuggets for 10 a piece at the mint in Britain, (f) exchange gold bars for 100 a piece at the mint, (g) get mutton for Boots (the cook in Lord British's castle). You buy the mutton at Paws for 3 and sell them for 5 (h) make bread for Willy the Baker in Britain, (i) collect pumpkins for Brownie (1 gold per pumpkin) (j) Gamble in Buccanneers Den: Rat Race-Pays 6 to 1, place bet on rat and click on board to start race Triples-Pays 3 to 1, save game, put all your money on board, click on wheel to turn it, if you loose restore and try again. Virtue Rolette-forgot how much it pays, place bet on colored stone and spin wheel (k) Search dungeons for treasure, Dugeon Destard (the dragon dungeon) has the best loot in it, but you have to fight dragons and drakes Dungeon of Despise has a lot of loot, but it's a really big dungeon filled with enemies. MAKING STUFF You can make bread by opening flour, putting flour on table, adding water to flour, then putting dough in oven to cook. Making bandages- use shears on cloth. You can make cloth by using a spool of thread on loom. You can make a spool of thread by using a bail of wool on a spinning wheel. THE GAME Well I just spent twelve pages on general tips! Now to the game! Unlike other Ultima's, the character creation really sucked! Two portraits to choose from, and both of them typical white, blond haired, blue eyed, people. They didn't do that in Ultima 7 part 2 luckily. Well the curtain opens and you see Iolo and Petre talking of Christopher's death. A moongate pops up and out comes the Avatar. Iolo will instantly greet you and fill you in on what has been happening. He'll join your party automatically. First off, go to the stables just to the north. Look at the key and take it. Mayor Finnigan should come in and ask you to solve the mystery. Accept his challenge. When he ask you if you searched the stalls answer yes and tell him you found a key. The stage is set and the hunt is afoot! Finnigan should have told you to go to Spark. Spark will be found just north of the trainer (which is northwest of the stables) in a two story house. Talk to him. Eventually he'll ask if he can join you. Allow him to join. On the second level of his house (the stairs look like a pile of wood) you'll find a chest. Use the key to open the chest. Get the items inside of it and ask Spark about them. Now talk to every single person in the town about the murder. Be sure to talk to Gilberato, who is wounded in the healers house (south of the provisioner Dell), and he'll tell you about the Crown Jewel. Talk to Gargan, he'll tell you about the Crown Jewel. Now you should have enough information to go to Finnigan for the report. Tell him you found a key, that the chest contained a medallion, gold, and scroll, that Christopher was a blacksmith, you have leads on the Crown Jewel, and the suspect has a Hook. He'll congratulate you and give you 100 gold. Now to get out of Trinsic you must know the password. Finnigan will give it to you if you can answer some question. He doubts your the Avatar and it's also a doc check area. It took me forever to figure it out so I'll give you the answers: Longitude of Skara Brae- 60 Latitude of Skara Brae- 30 Longitude of Buccaneer's Den- 60 Latitude of Buccaneer's Den- 60 Lattitude of Deep Forest- 60 Latitude of Dagger Isle- 0 Longitude of Terfin- 120 Latitude of Spektram- 120 The password is BLACKBIRD if you care. Now you are free to go. There is a matter of training and equipment. Have Spark get trained. You can also steal money and equipment from residential houses (though the AVATAR would never do that). Before you leave make sure you've talked to Klog. Keep talking to him till you learn of the travellers Abraham and Elizabeth. THAT'S WHAT FRIENDS ARE FOR....... Now that you've left Trinsic, I suggest to round up the people you want in your party. If this means travelling by sea, get a boat from either Gargan in Trinsic, Jehanne in Serpent's Hold, or Russel in New Magincia. They sell boats for 600 gold. Make sure you've equiped all your members. Here's a tip to make a lot of money----The tiny island directly west of Serpent's Hold (the one with the small mountain), has a cave in the mountain side (the south end). In the cave, their lies many rings (invisbility, regeneration, protection), many many gold bars and nuggets, about 6 glass swords, and many other useful equipment. Be sure you save before you enter because their is a trap in the cave. You'll also see a dead body there. Also work a bit to make some more money. Now before I go on, I'm going to walk you through all the mini quests in each town. Before you venture into these quests, make sure you have everybody you want in your party so that all of them may benefit from the experience points. ELEMENTRY MY DEAR AVATAR............ Ok to gain experience fight a lot (you'll also gain equipment and money!) and solve quests. Here's all the quests and how to solve them. If you don't want to know DON'T READ AHEAD! General Questing Tips: Most of the quests can be solved just by talking to everybody in town. BAD TIMES IN BRITAIN.......... There are a few quests in Britain. One is to join the Fellowship. (YOU GET A LOT OF EXPERIENCE FOR DOING SO). To join first you must deliver a package to Minoc. (don't open it, but you will find many clues if you do on second thought open it, you're going to have to go on another one anyway). Deliver the package to the Fellowship head in Minoc, Elynor. While your in Minoc, check out the murder at the sawmill and get the serpentine dagger next to the bodies. After you have delivered the package return to Batlin (you went to him to join. Oh I forgot, go to him to join, answer the questions deliver package). He'll tell you to go to the dungeon Destard to retrieve a package filled with money. He'll also tell you it's deserted (which is an absolute lie!). Dungeon Destard can be found by going south through Paws and then south through th swamp south of Paws (did that make sense?). Anyway once you have reached the end of the swamp, go west (left), untill you hit a mountainside. Travel south and you'll reach a cave. Shamino will tell you that it's the Dungeon Destard. Don't go through this opening. Follow the mountain side back up on the other side and you'll eventually reach another opening, this is the one you want to take. Now there are many ways to do this. If you have strong enough characters by this time (by going through other quests and killing enemies) you can fight your way through. Otherwise either wait till you are strong enough or tell everyone in your party to leave and wait here. Enter the dungeon. Use an invisbility potion (black one) or ring or spell on yourself Going west will lead you to a camp of people. Talk to them and you'll learn about their quest to find a unicorn. Go back east and follow the path to the south. Eventually you'll reach a bigger room. In that room you'll find a body next to a fellowship staff. The chest will not contain any gold. Exit out of the dungeon after searching the chest. Get your party members to join you (if you made them leave). Now use the enterance at the south end (the one you passed up early). Follow that enterance to the north and you'll find the unicorn. Talk to him (or her?). Listen to everything he has to say. Return to the camp and tell them you found the unicorn. Go back to Batlin and tell him the chest was empty. He'll let you join You have to go to the Fellowship meeting at 9:00 pm and you will be inducted in. There's a doc check here. Your companions will tell you not to join, but do it anyway. DO NOT WEAR THE FELLOWSHIP MEDDALION BATLIN GIVES YOU. Take it but don't wear it.
